INSYDOUT
I’ve slipped into (or maybe on
) deep thought about what makes a Zentangle pattern a “Zentangle® pattern”. Is it the process/steps in creating the tangle, or is it how the tangle looks in the end? What distinguishes a whole new pattern from a tanglation of an existing one? (Another day’s blog post, lol.)
Well, I did my research on this one. This new pattern INSYDOUT is not Oof (or any tanglation thereof). It is also not Bales or Chillon or Warble or any other pattern I could find. I asked for a couple of opinions and got feedback that it was a tanglation of some of the above. Hmmm… I don’t think so… none of these patterns have “empty squares” and Oof is drawn off of small diamonds, not a lined grid. If anyone knows of the name of a pattern that this one mimics, I’d love to know!
In any case, what “makes or breaks” a pattern for me is how it FEELS to draw it. I’ve mentioned before that I prefer to lift my pen as little as possible. Well, INSYDOUT is a Bales-and-Oof-looking pattern that is employs one continuous line for each grid line, in each direction (wow, think that ten times fast LOL
).
Here are the STEPS:
Here are some variations:
Finally, here are some tiles showing INSYDOUT:

These are actualy done in my journal inside tracings of tiles. (I had no tiles on hand, and when the tangle bug calls, I must answer
)

I was just tangling with this pattern again and had an insight. INSYDOUT follows the same kind of focus I use when creating the “W2″ weave pattern…that sense of parallel facing sets of lines either being “inside” or “outside”….just an observation
… it may only make sense to me LOL
